L\u2019amiante est un min\u00e9ral fibreux qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 largement utilis\u00e9 par le pass\u00e9 pour ses nombreuses utilisations, notamment dans le b\u00e2timent. Le Qu\u00e9bec occupait d\u2019ailleurs autrefois une place de choix dans l\u2019extraction\/exportation d\u2019amiante chrysotile. Bien que l\u2019encadrement de l\u2019amiante fasse l\u2019objet aujourd\u2019hui d\u2019un encadrement relativement strict, il n\u2019existe pas au Qu\u00e9bec de norme sur la pr\u00e9sence d\u2019amiante dans l\u2019eau potable. Cette situation commence d\u2019ailleurs \u00e0 soulever l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat dans le public depuis le printemps.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En effet, l\u2019amiante peut se retrouver dans l\u2019eau que l\u2019on consomme. Il en existe bien s\u00fbr de fa\u00e7on naturelle dans le sous-sol qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois, mais c\u2019est surtout l\u2019apport des canalisations en fibrociment qui inqui\u00e8te. La d\u00e9gradation de ces canalisations avec le temps peut rel\u00e2cher des fibres dans le syst\u00e8me de distribution d\u2019eau potable et \u00eatre consomm\u00e9e par l\u2019Homme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Risques pour la sant\u00e9<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les effets de l\u2019exposition \u00e0 l\u2019amiante inhal\u00e9e sont tr\u00e8s bien connus. Cancer du poumon, m\u00e9soth\u00e9liome, asbestose, l\u2019amiante demeure la cause de d\u00e9c\u00e8s professionnel la plus fr\u00e9quente chez nous. Toutefois, les effets de l\u2019ingestion d\u2019amiante, plut\u00f4t que l\u2019inhalation, restent mal connus. On sait que dans certains cas que l\u2019on pourrait qualifier d\u2019extr\u00eames, l\u2019amiante ing\u00e9r\u00e9 est li\u00e9 \u00e0 une incidence de cancers gastro-intestinaux plus \u00e9lev\u00e9s. Le lien \u00e9pid\u00e9miologique reste \u00e0 confirmer, mais on se doute donc qu\u2019une ingestion continue de fibres pourrait causer une augmentation de ces cancers (ex.&nbsp;: de l\u2019estomac, rectal, de la rate, du colon, du pancr\u00e9as, etc.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019agence am\u00e9ricaine de protection de l\u2019environnement poss\u00e8de, comme quelques autres pays dans le monde, une norme sur la pr\u00e9sence de fibres dans l\u2019eau potable. C\u2019est de cette limite fix\u00e9e \u00e0 7 millions de fibres par litre d\u2019eau que le Qu\u00e9bec pourrait s\u2019inspirer selon toute vraisemblance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cela peut sembler \u00e9norme, mais il faut se rappeler que ces fibres sont extr\u00eamement fines et que l\u2019\u00e9rosion des canalisations s\u00e9pare les faisceaux de fibres d\u2019amiantes que l\u2019on observe habituellement au microscope optique en fibrilles extr\u00eamement fines de l\u2019ordre d\u2019une vingtaine de nanom\u00e8tres de c\u00f4t\u00e9 (0.00002 mm).
